We are delighted to announce the results from our inaugural Electric Road EV Owner Awards, and they provide crucial insight for anyone looking to make the switch to electric without breaking the bank.
After analysing thousands of owner submissions, three excellent vehicles rose above the rest to claim the top spots in their respective size categories for ‘Value for Money’. From affordable city cars to highly-equipped family cruisers, here is an in-depth look at the top three EVs that deliver the most bang for your buck on the market today, backed by the real-world experiences of the people who drive them every day.
The Small EV Winner: BYD Dolphin Surf
Taking the crown for the best value Small EV is the BYD Dolphin Surf. With a highly impressive 87.5% of its owners selecting ‘Value for Money’ as one of the standout features, the Dolphin Surf proves that entry-level EVs do not require sacrificing quality or technology.
Achieving an overall rating of 4.81 out of 5 stars, the Dolphin Surf hit a nerve with budget-conscious buyers who were surprised by the level of standard equipment packed into its compact frame. It’s an EV that makes the transition from combustion power feel financially irresistible.
What the owners say
Owners consistently highlighted the combination of low purchase costs, minimal running expenses, and strong equipment levels.
“I wasn’t looking to purchase a new car but fell in love with the look of the Dolphin Surf and the 0% finance offer was a no-brainer. EVs are cheaper to run and soooooo much nicer to drive!!” stated one delighted owner.
Another owner simply summarized its appeal: “Car is comfortable, cheap to run and has lots of features for a low-cost car. Top value, great software and tech.”
The Medium-Sized Masterclass: Leapmotor C10
The incredibly competitive ‘Medium-sized EV’ category was won by the Leapmotor C10. An astonishing 94.1% of C10 owners selected ‘Value for Money’ as a core reason they love their vehicle – the highest percentage of any EV.
The C10 delivers the spaciousness and practicality of a large family SUV at a price point that undercuts much of its established competition. It successfully tempts buyers away from traditional petrol and diesel vehicles based entirely on its economic merits.
What the owners say
The C10’s running costs and overall package were frequently praised in the owner feedback.
My fuel costs were £40 a week with a diesel car. I’m now roughly £4 a week charging my car,” noted one owner, highlighting the immediate financial benefits.
Another owner emphasized the comprehensive nature of the car: “Such great value for money, it’s comfortable, spacious and good to drive. If you want a large family SUV at the right price, then I would recommend it.”
The Large EV Leader: BYD Seal
Proving that even premium, high-performance EVs can offer tremendous value, the BYD Seal took home the crown for the ‘Large EV’ category. Over 64% of Seal owners praised its value proposition, allowing it to beat out the incredibly popular Tesla Model Y.
The BYD Seal succeeds because it offers the acceleration, luxury, and technology of traditional executive saloons but at a highly disruptive price point. It challenges the assumption that long-range, high-end electric vehicles must carry an exorbitant price tag.
What the owners say
BYD Seal owners were thrilled by the level of performance and premium features included as standard.
“Excellent value for money. Loads of extras as standard. Great to drive!,” explained one owner.
Another owner perfectly summarized how the car punches above its weight class in terms of perceived quality: “Faster than anything I’ve ever driven. People are genuinely gobsmacked with the quality as they assume Chinese will be rubbish. Very surprised by this car.”
The models above had the highest percentage of owners cite ‘Value for Money’ as one their favourite features, within their respective size categories. Only models with a minimum of 20 unique submissions were considered for the Owner Awards. All images were sourced from the respective manufacturers’ media websites.
