John B drives a Volkswagen ID.3 Family Pro 58kWh 2022, standard specification.
This is John’s second electric car, he’s owned the Volkswagen ID.3 less than a year and drives under 5,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 20,000-30,000 miles and he achieves 180 miles from an 80% charge.
Why did you choose the Volkswagen ID.3?
I had a BMW i3 REx and wanted something comparable so investigated the VW ID.3 range. I wanted some specific equipment: reversing camera, sunroof, heated seats/wheel/mirrors, LED lighting, bluetooth connection and the Family version had all this equipment. The automatic LED headlights are amazing.
Positives
- Great lighting
- comfortable
- average of 4+ miles per kWh
- quiet
- good road manners
- bigger inside than it looks.
Negatives
- The large windscreen can cause reflections
- the wipers are still set up for LHD (a silly miss!)
- the rear ‘spoiler’ cuts off the rear view (if like me you’re tall).
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
Yes. I usually charge at home overnight and reliably get 180+ miles at 80%/220 miles at 100%. It’s a 58kWh battery.
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
I had to have a front wheel ball-joint bush replaced. That cost £120.
What are the standout technological features of the car?
The headlights are a standout. The link with Android Auto is excellent. The automatic cruise control is excellent and very reactive to changes in speed limits, road conditions etc.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your VW ID.3
I just like the way it looks. It’s white with a black roof, full sunroof and alloy wheels.
What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
All the rubbish about range anxiety. Owning an EV is just a different way of thinking.
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
Maybe the Renault 4.

Do you have a home charging unit installed?
No
