Michael MacCarthy drives a Jaguar I-PACE 90kWh 2021 electric car.
This is Michael’s second electric car, he’s owned the I-PACE 3-4 years and drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 30,000-40,000 miles and he achieves 240 miles range from a full charge.
Why did you choose the Jaguar I-PACE?
I liked the styling and also the car being higher than a saloon car made it easier for me to get in and out. My previous diesel car was costing me around £200 per month on fuel. The running cost if you charge an electric car at home is a fraction of this.
Positives
- Comfortable
- reliable
- quite fast!
Negatives
- Range drops considerably in winter
- going on long journeys can be stressful, trying to find a charger that works
- the vision out of the back is poor.
Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?
It seems to charge at the same rate but the range is decreasing with age.
Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
Had a water leak through the front screen, but sorted at main dealer.
What are the standout technological features of the car?
- Headlights are great!
- very comfortable
- easy to drive.
Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your Jaguar I-PACE
Panoramic sunroof is a plus!
What’s the biggest or funniest myth you’ve heard about EVs?
Mainly that the batteries cannot be recycled but pretty sure they can be.
What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?
I’d like an estate as you can get so much more in them, so a VW ID.7 or Audi A6 Avant e-tron.
Home charging unit
Pod Point Solo – the app doesn’t always work how it should.
Electricity supplier & tariff
Octopus – we have a cheap rate for 5 hours every night.
What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
I’ve used Mer UK, GRIDSERVE and InstaVolt, all much of a muchness.
Insurance
LV= 2023 premium almost doubled, last year went down slightly.

No road tax (although it’s coming in April ‘25) and cheap to charge. Probably save around £150 per month.
