Steve Price drives a Hyundai IONIQ 5 Ultimate Long Range AWD 70kWh 2021.

This is Steve’s third EV and he’s owned the IONIQ 5 between 3-4 years. Steve drives 10,000-15,000 miles annually and the current mileage of the car is between 40,000-50,000 miles. He achieves, on average, 260 miles range from an 80% charge in the summer and 200 miles in the winter. Steve’s IONIQ 5 has the Tech Pack.

Why did you choose this car?

A very well designed vehicle, with good efficiency, good performance and tremendous comfort levels. Long distance drives are a breeze as it charges so fast due to 800v architecture. We are often waiting for my wife’s black americano coffee to cool enough to drink for longer than it takes the car to charge. Long drives are so relaxed, and we arrive ready for activity.

The self-driving feature works better than the Tesla we had, despite the fact that it’s Tesla that gets all the press🤪. The design of the car is great, and its much bigger than it looks. The head up display is excellent and there’s massive leg room as a bespoke EV. Rear seats slide to give more boot space or more passenger space as desired. Lots of really useful features, really thoughtfully designed.

Positives

Negatives

Long wheelbase means the turning circle isn’t the tightest, but it’s not a massive issue…just thought I needed to put something here!

On our model, switching between user profiles can sometimes take 20 secs, which is weird, e.g. waiting for the seat to move to your position, or phone to connect. Again, not a biggy and likely improved in later models.

Compared to when you first bought the car, does your battery still charge at the same rate & do you still get the same range?

I’ve been taking screenshots of its range when charged to 100% from the app, every year since owning it at roughly the same date. Results are:

• 30th August 2024: 336 miles
• 5th Sept 2025: 315 miles
• 25th August 2026: 331miles

We bought it in April 2023. Pretty much no change…

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

• Rear hatch rattle: fixed under warranty
• radar intermittent: fixed under warranty
• ICCU: software updated with recall.

What are the standout technological features of the car?

Chassis is brilliant, a great balance of comfort and control. Performance is quick with 0-60mph in approx. 5 secs, but also efficient with 300 miles range easily in the summer. Super fast charging means long distance stops never controlled by the charge time of the car.

Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about your Hyundai IONIQ 5

Super comfortable! Long trips are a breeze and motorway miles are just eaten up. Compared to the Tesla we had, it is so much more a long distance car as well as being perfect for daily use.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

Maybe another IONIQ 5 or a Polestar or a Kia.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

IONITY, InstaVolt, GRIDSERVE and Tesla Supercharger network. I tend to stick to the ones that accept our Octopus card so we get the discount.

In Cornwall, some of the locally run ones in car parks require apps but are in areas with no signal 😡. We found the best are the ones in National Trust places that take a contactless payment. Not fast, but then if you’re out for 4-5 hours on a walk, it doesn’t matter.

Absolutely massively! We charge for free from surplus solar from our roof panels from March to September. In the winter, we get paid to charge overnight at about £30 per month on Gridpay. If we bought all our electricity at the 8.5p rate, the costs to do 12,000 miles work out at:

• Car averages about 4 miles per kWh (less in winter more in summer)
• 12,000 ÷ 4 = 3,000 kWh
• 3,000 × 0.085 = £255 for the year on ‘fuel’.
