Terence drives an MG5 EV Exclusive 53kWh 2021 and shares how he got into electric.
Why did you buy this electric car?
We were very impressed by our son’s Tesla Model 3 but weren’t prepared to spend that kind of money. So we P/X for a year-old MG5 EV as we wanted a large boot for our greyhound to ride in. The specification was also very comprehensive and makes driving very easy. Aged 81 and having driven automatics for many years, I found the change over to EV driving quite easy. The main challenge is adjusting to the speed of acceleration which is very fast and letting the car slow down by lifting your foot off the pedal.
What got you into an electric car in the first place?
Fuel prices and environmental concerns re: pollution. Also, in getting older, this MG5 has so many safety features and helpful applications, it makes driving easier and more relaxed. So you can concentrate fully on driving whilst the car also advises you of many things – lane changes, speed limits, hand- free phone calls etc.
Initially, what did you find most confusing about electric car ownership and how did you solve that?
Still not over happy with the sat-nav loading and its directions, it seems to pick very complicated routes using many minor roads and lanes instead of major roads. So we use Google Maps and the mobile phone instead.
What sources of information helped you e.g. people, groups, websites etc?
Our son (who has a Tesla), a test drive at a local dealer, car magazines and websites including Electric Road.
What are your top pieces of advice for those people considering their first electric car?
- Talk to people who have an EV
- take a test drive or two
- don’t worry about the negative comments on the internet.
