MG5 EV 2022 electric car owner review

MG5 EV 2022 electric car owner review

Richard drives a MG5 EV 61kWh 2022.

This is Richard’s first electric car, he’s owned the MG5 EV from new and drives 5,000-10,000 miles annually. The current mileage of the car is between 5,000-10,000 miles and he achieves 200 miles from a full charge.

Why did you choose the MG5 EV?

I wanted a relatively low cost way into EV motoring, combined with as long a range as possible. The estate body style is not my usual choice but has proved valuable for holidays and the occasional moving of large items. I also got a good part exchange and finance deal at the time.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this electric car

  • Space
  • range
  • safety features
  • comfort
  • ease of use.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this electric car

  • Some of the automated features are either over or under sensitive
  • looks are a bit bland, not very inspiring but OK for the money.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?

A one-off when the charging door wouldn’t open but a run down the motorway fixed it. Infotainment screen sometimes freezes or randomly resets itself. Auto lights often don’t come on soon enough, while the auto wipers have a mind of their own. Mostly minor niggles rather than major faults.

What are the standout technological features of your MG5 EV?

Different power modes and regenerative braking modes, like most EVs. Adaptive cruise control, not only matches speed to the car in front but also controls speed in corners. Keyless entry and start is useful.

Adjustable boot floor gives more storage or luggage space as needed. 7 year warranty – although this covers less items as time progresses – and AA membership is automatically renewed when you service at a main dealer.

What electric car(s) are you interested in next and why?

KIA or Hyundai for the quality, having had these brands before.

Do you charge your electric car from home?

No

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?

Life EV/Raw Charging are good for a slower all day charge whilst at work – lower cost and often located in long stay car parks. InstaVolt is consistently the most reliable for rapid charging but is more expensive.

Insurer – outline both positive & negative elements

LV insurance – I’ve never had a negative experience with them. Easy to update policy details, special EV policy covers things like running out of charge or damage to cables, EV hire cars are available too if you need to make a claim.

Please itemise where you’re saving money owning & running a MG5 EV

Free road tax saves £12 per month. Cheaper service plan saves £7 per month compared to petrol models. Most expensive rapid charging currently similar to petrol costs in terms of mileage achieved but slower or home charging will be cheaper. I also got a small rebate on my insurance when switching from a KIA Niro Hybrid.
