Why did you choose this car?
It was the cheapest EV I could buy. I also considered a similarly aged LEAF.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this car?

  • Perfect little commuter car
  • Quirky and unusual enough to be a good conversation starter about EVs
  • Absolutely no maintenance required the whole time I’ve owned it.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this car?

  • 2012 battery starting to show its age
  • Heating system is awful, not even worth turning it on
  • Windscreen has an alarming tendency to steam up in cold weather.

Surprise us! Tell us something surprising about this car?
When it was new in 2012, the iOn was massively over-priced; the original owners would have lost a lot of value. But as a second-hand car, the depreciation has been almost zero. It’s still worth virtually the same as what I paid for it four years ago, despite doubling in age.

What car are you interested in next and why?
I always intended for the iOn to be always a stepping stone to a bigger EV once there were more EVs on the market. We’re moving up to a Tesla Model 3 very soon.

What home charging unit do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?
I have a Rolec charger. It’s very basic, just plug in and go; no app, no switches, no timed charging. I should have done more research to find the best one but I’m perfectly happy with what I have. It works well and it’s simple to use.

What home electricity supplier & tariff do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?
I use OVO but not on an EV-specialised tariff. The iOn uses so little power that it hasn’t been necessary. With the plan to buy a bigger EV soon though, I have been considering switching energy suppliers/tariff as well.

What public charging networks do you use? Would you recommend them to others and why?
In four years of ownership, I have never used a public charger with the iOn. Home charging means it’s full every morning and we simply haven’t needed to drive it beyond its range.

Who do you insure your EV with? Would you recommend them to others and why?
We use Hastings insurance but only because it was the cheapest for the iOn. They don’t have an EV-specialist product that I’m aware of.
