UK Fuel Poll 2025: Latest findings

UK Fuel Poll 2024: Present & Future - latest findings

Here are the latest UK Fuel Poll results on fuel choices for both today, tomorrow & 2050.

These latest findings are based on submissions received from 2nd August 2024 – 17th January 2025.

The UK Fuel Poll was communicated to Electric Road’s database and social media audiences. The total submission base at the time of compiling was 6,408 achieving a 70% completion rate. We will continue to promote the UK Fuel Poll and publish findings on an ongoing basis.

What fuel type is your current car?

No surprise a disproportionate amount of EV drivers undertook this poll given who we are. Since we last published these results however, Electric ownership has decreased from 39.3% to just over 35% and Hybrid ownership has gone from 17.4% to 8.1%. Conversely, Petrol ownership has increased from 25.8% to 30.1% and Diesel has also increased from 17.5% to 26.2%. Clearly, these results are slowly but surely becoming more representative of the current breakdown of fuel types on UK roads.

What fuel type will your next car be?

With well over a thousand more submissions since we last published the findings in early December, the results are virtually the same! The biggest increase has seen Petrol go from 25.8% to 26.2% and the biggest loss has seen Hybrid decrease from 17.4% to 17.1%. So even with more current petrol & diesel owners from the previous graph, that isn’t reflected in the fuel type of their next car.

What ‘fuel type’ do you think will be the predominant choice for UK drivers in 2050?

Again, findings are very similar to the last time we published them. Hydrogen & synthetic fuels are still ranking very highly with the presumed opinion that there’s time for these fuels to come to the fore for one means of transportation or another.
