Why did you choose this car?
I had been driving a Tesla Model S90D since 2015 and wanted something different. Jaguar announced the I-PACE and so I placed my deposit in early 2018 and took delivery of my First Edition in December the same year. I was very impressed with the car when it was delivered, it was beautifully built, looked fantastic on 22 inch wheels and was very quick.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this car.

  • The fit and finish are excellent
  • it looks amazing on 22 inch wheels
  • is a car that I never get tired of looking at.

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this car.

  • The charging speed could be better – it peaks at just over 100kW if you meet all the criteria (SoC, temp etc)
  • The rear camera is always filthy (thanks to the aero shape and sharp cut-off at the rear)
  • The on-board software and remote relationship with InControl and the navigation software is a bit flaky at times.

Have you experienced any faults with the car? If so, what have they been?
The rear power struts on the boot lid had to be replaced when the tailgate would not stay open at full height. Jaguar sent a technician to my house and changed them in just a few minutes (brilliant service as always from Jaguar Assistance). I also had a strange ‘rumbling’ noise from the front of the car. At first it was suspected the wheel bearings were faulty but as the fault persisted after they were changed, the front electric motor was replaced.

What are the standout tech features of the car?
Steering Assist in combination with Active Cruise Control is excellent; it also has a really useful speed limit function which reads the speed signs and adjusts the the limit on the fly. I find this really useful and I am sure it has saved my licence a couple of times.

The other thing I love is the adaptive LED headlights, they are incredible on a dark road. You can actually see the LEDs sequentially shutting down and switching on in order to create the shadows so that other drivers are not dazzled. They are affectionately known as the dancing headlights by those that have them. Brilliant feature.

My car also has air suspension with adaptive damping. You can drive the car around bends at lightning speed and the car does its best to remain near flat as it corners. I often say that because of this, the car is far more capable than I am brave!

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this car.
There is a panic button on the key fob – if you hold it down it sets the vehicle alarm off. Of course, I found it by accident late one night! It also has a gesture control tailgate. If you swipe your foot under the rear of the car, the tailgate opens. I always find it a bit hit and miss although 3 years in, I reckon I have it mastered now. The only time it works 100% is when you wash the car and drag the hose under the rear. The tailgate opens every time you have a power washer in your hand 🙂

What car are you interested in next and why?
An Audi e-tron GT is my top contender. I have always been an Audi fan and loved my test drive in the e-tron GT. The only thing holding me back (apart from the £110k+ price) is that it is a big car. I am also hedging my bets and waiting to see what the 2023 e-tron looks like; on paper it is rumoured to be a big change over the existing e-tron models.

I drove the e-tron 55 Sportback and loved that car but with long lead times and a new model on the horizon, I did not want to place an order only to find that as soon as I receive my car, a new model hits the roads.

Meanwhile, I have a new I-PACE being delivered the week after next and I am going to drive that while I finally make my mind up and place an order. Who knows, the 2022 I-PACE might be so good that I just hang on to it and take the Audi interest no further.

What home charging unit do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?
I have solar and battery at home and my SolarEdge inverter is also an integrated car charge point. It is a brilliant piece of kit with loads of remotely accessible features and timed functions.

What home electricity supplier & tariff do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?
Octopus Go but no point recommending it to others currently. With increased energy prices, most people are better off sticking with their existing providers to make sure they get price cap protection.

What public charging networks would you recommend to others and why?
Instavolt, IONITY and Gridserve. Most of these just work, are easy to use albeit IONITY is very expensive unless you enjoy some type of membership or subscription.

List your top 3 favourite public charging networks (in order of preference).

  • Instavolt
  • Gridserve
  • IONITY.

Who do you insure your EV with? Would you recommend them to others and why?
LV Multi Car – great price and seems to be a good company to deal with.
