Why did you choose this car?
Being of larger proportion (width-wise) than most drivers, I needed a larger vehicle so I could get in and out more comfortably and I wanted something that was fairly roomy inside so that the family are comfortable.

Positives – List 3 or more reasons why you love this car.

  • I love the look of it, it is really stylish
  • It is very comfortable to drive
  • It is fast when you want it to be but not so fast that it’s silly
  • great in built-up traffic (which I hate) with its semi autonomous driving mode
  • the heads up display is a great addition
  • the panoramic (and opening) sunroof .

Negatives – List 3 or more things that you really don’t like about this car.

  • The range could be better
  • It can be a bit aggressive when following Lane Control. If you forget to indicate you have to fight it to get it over the line).
  • The boot space is pretty small even though it is 500 litres, we struggle to get anything else in if the dog is in there.

Have you experienced any faults with the vehicle? If so, what have they been?
The car decided it did not want to move when we returned to it after an evening out. All the electrics were there, it was just when you put it into drive and tried to pull away it did not move. Called BMW breakdown and they had someone on the way. In the meanwhile I got out and took a walk, came back and hey presto, problem was gone. Not had the problem since.

What are the standout tech features of the car?
Adaptive cruise is very good. Follows car in front nicely and has radar etc. so you see the other traffic around you on the screen. The heads up display is excellent and a really great addition. The electric fold out towbar is really convenient.

Surprise us! Tell us something people wouldn’t readily know about this car?
You can use your iPhone as a digital key and let others use their phones to open it etc.

What car are you interested in next and why?
Tesla Model Y – I am interested in seeing how roomy it is inside for the driver and passengers (and luggage). The Supercharger network is the major USP on these for me. From the reviews I have seen it does not drive that well, so would like to check that out for myself.

What home charging unit do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?
Andersen A2 – really stylish unit, and the cable is out of sight for clean lines. There are also brushes that clean the cable as you put them away. The app is easy to use, and with optional extras it will keep an eye on the load it is drawing and will throttle back if other power is needed around the house. It also has the ability to connect to a solar system which I will look into in the future.

What home electricity supplier & tariff do you use? Would you recommend it to others and why?
Shell Energy standard tariff – we can change in a few months time, so would look at companies/tariffs that are more economic for EV users.

Rate your electricity supplier out of 5.

What public charging networks do you recommend to others and why?
IONITY – they have 350 kW chargers. Expensive at 69p/kw (mine is reduced to 26p through BMW). Very quick to charge. Instavolt are a bit slower but cheaper at 45p/kw. bp pulse – used local one before getting home charger. Not used any others yet.

List your top three favourite public charging networks (in order of preference).

  • IONITY
  • Instavolt
  • bp pulse.

Who do you insure your EV with? Would you recommend them to others and why?
Admiral – seems good value. Does not require tracker like some other insurance companies.

Estimate how much money you save per month owning and running an EV compared to a petrol/diesel car?
£200.
