ONTO – the new electric car subscription service

These days most people are used to subscription service models be that for a mobile phone or for streaming services. Monthly payments rather than outright ownership does seem increasingly to be the popular choice for many people across numerous products and services. But did you know that something similar is now happening in the car market?

Since 2018, ONTO has expanded rapidly, partnering with new charging and electric car providers as more EVs become available to suit all budgets. ONTO is part of a movement to give consumers more freedom and flexibility with how they drive but not in quite the same wat that current leasing and finance deals offer.

ONTO’s electrical car subscription is even more flexible than this as one monthly payment covers:

  • The electric car itself
  • Free public charging on the BP Pulse & Shell Recharge networks
  • 1,000 miles per month
  • Comprehensive insurance
  • Breakdown cover
  • Servicing
  • Maintenance
  • Road tax
  • …and without the long-term commitment.

So this all-inclusive monthly payment covers everything taking the hassle out of sorting each individual element.

ONTO’s CEO, Rob Jolly said, “At Onto, we’re focused on making driving EVs easy, accessible and affordable. Our all-inclusive subscription comes with insurance, servicing and charging, offering all the benefits of car ownership but none of the hassle.”

“We want to accelerate EV adoption and offer customers the flexibility to change their car model as and when required, and that’s why we’re continually expanding our fleet to offer a wide range of EVs suitable for different lifestyles.”

So why does it benefit the consumer?

Put simply, it gives the consumer more control and fewer ties over their driving. The world is ever-changing and the importance of owning a car is now deemed less important to consumers when they can weigh up the alternative methods of driving.

Subscribing is easy with ONTO. Firstly, register with your driving license and within 24-48 hours your account will be activated. Once you’ve decided on a car you can collect it from the ONTO depot or have it delivered to you by a member of their team.

On receipt of your car, you can choose to open the car with a set of keys or you can unlock your chosen car with the ONTO phone app. Many of their customers find this easier than using keys apparently.

Is a car subscription worth it?

Based on price and simplicity alone it could well be and we suggest Electric Road readers to take a look at their website in more detail. There are other benefits to consider also:

More variety – with an electric car subscription you get to try various cars so it’s exciting and hassle-free as you can swap cars easily.

Fuel savings – Total Jobs estimates that UK commuters will spend over £135,000 on fuel by the time they retire with the average UK employee spending £146 on their monthly commute. ONTO’s Polar Plus membership card gives you free charging at over 7,000 charging points across the UK. Recently, ONTO partnered with InstaVolt offering all customers free charging across their 600 networks nationwide. They are capable of delivering up to 125kW charging speeds – adding hundreds of miles of range in half an hour.

Less interaction with human beings – ONTO understands we’ve all been frustrated in the past with phone conversations and dealing with customer service situations. ONTO’s electric car subscriptions take away this hassle as the majority of interaction is automated through their app.

Flexibility – younger people are generally less concerned with car ownership and people switch jobs more frequently and consumer choices change more quickly so ONTO’s flexible package allows consumers to change their mind on what car they are driving.

Car maintenance – With ONTO, your maintenance bills are included in your subscription which leads to significant cost savings and also takes out the frustration of dealing with garages.

Transparency – When you buy a car on finance you often get various add-ons that add further cost e.g. insurance, interior or exterior features. Everyone wants to have security and trust when making purchases which is what you get with an ONTO subscription. There are no extra costs, just an overall price for all features related to the car.

Clean air zones – there are already various low emission zones in London and there will be zones coming to other UK cities also. Petrol and diesel car drivers will be penalised for driving in these areas. Even in a year of lockdowns, families that used an electric car through ONTO in 2020 saved 690 kg of CO2 going into the atmosphere – equivalent to them having recycled 30 bags of rubbish instead of sending it to landfill. They also saved £350 in fuel – enough to pay for a Netflix subscription for the next two years!

Community – The EV car subscription industry is an innovative movement that already has a strong market base. By joining ONTO you’ll be part of a community of EV owners and enthusiasts that support each other and engage in interesting discussions.
